Ansel Adams created Portfolio IV, “What Majestic Word” to raise funds for conservationists Dorothy and Russell Varian’s dream of preserving what is now Castle Rock State Park. Their dream became a reality in 1959 with the aid of Sempervirens Fund. Varian Associates gifted the portfolio, containing 15 silver gelatin prints each signed by Ansel Adams, to Sempervirens Fund to raise funds for acquisition and preservation of redwood lands in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
If you know anyone who is an art collector and might be interested in bidding on the portfolio, please share the auction information with them. Christie’s predicts the final sale price for the collection will be between $50,000 and $70,000. Please be aware that the successful bidder does not receive a tax deduction for the purchase.
