Big Basin Recovery and Redwoods Restoration Ambassador Guide

Big Basin Recovery and Redwood Restoration Ambassador Toolkit & Guide

Dry lightning on August 17th started fires at various locations across San Mateo and Santa Cruz Counties and quickly spread, burning tens of thousands of acres, including forests at well-known parks such as Big Basin, Butano, and Henry Cowell state parks. The damage will differ between the parks, and we will assess it as soon as it is safe to access these areas again. The heart of the fire was at Big Basin, and several historic buildings have burned down and many trees have toppled. While the redwoods are resilient, many have been burned and charred, some have fallen, and many of their less resilient counterparts like douglas fir, madrones, and tan oak will most likely need to be cleared in the restoration effort while the park infrastructure is rebuilt to make it safe to return to these parks.

Why start recovery now:

While the impact on the bio-region as a whole won’t be evident for years, it is important to do as much prevention and mitigation prior to the rainy season, as we will face serious landslide threats once the rain starts to fall. Also, important fire-fighting resources such as water tanks and water lines have damaged or melted and will need to be restored. In order to mitigate more risks to the parks, wildlife, and the people who love them, we must put the recovery into motion immediately.

Purpose of this kit:

Enable advocates of Santa Cruz redwood forests and Big Basin Redwoods State Park to provide immediate support for the forest restoration work needed throughout the Santa Cruz mountains, as well as to make parks accessible again, and plan for their longer-term recovery.

What partners and advocates can do:

  1. Send a personalized email to your network. Sample below.
  2. Share Sempervirens Fund recovery updates, the recovery fund, and upcoming volunteer opportunities on social media.
  3. Sign up for news from Sempervirens Fund if you haven’t already here

Dear Friend,

I am inviting you to help Big Basin Redwoods State Park, and the redwoods and wildlife throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains, recover from devastating fire damage. Big Basin is special to me because ________
It is also special to millions of people who may have first stood in the shadow of a redwood tree there. Not all the redwoods are lost, and there will be new growth, but the park is forever transformed.

Fortunately, Sempervirens Fund, California’s first land trust, has started two funds to help with these urgent recovery efforts. They have created the Big Basin Recovery Fund and invited Save the Redwoods League to join in raising funds to support the park’s immediate recovery needs. The Santa Cruz Redwoods Restoration Fund will help Sempervirens Fund restore forests throughout the region. Join me in supporting these efforts: Big Basin Recovery Fund & Santa Cruz Redwoods Restoration Fund

You can follow Sempervirens Fund for updates on Facebook or Twitter or by signing up for news.

Thank you for joining me in helping Big Basin and the redwood forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains recover.

From, You
