News from the Campaign

New Name, Same Campaign!

(posted June 2015)
We are excited to announce we have changed our name to the Cotoni-Coast Dairies National Monument campaign. Formerly called the Santa Cruz Redwoods campaign, the Cotoni-Coast Dairies name celebrates the rich and diverse cultural history of this natural landscape.

Cotoni (pronounced “Cho-toni”) honors the Cotoni tribe that inhabited this area for thousands of years prior to European contact. Coast Dairies, the property’s current name, recognizes the European history beginning when Swiss dairy farmers acquired the land in the 1860s.

Read Cotoni-Coast Dairies – Natural, Cultural and Historic Resources for more information, and you can read more about the name change process below.

Campaign Supports Local Solutions Proposed by County Board of Supervisors, Including Cotoni-Coast Dairies Name

(posted June 2015)
On April 21, 2015 the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to support the designation of Coast Dairies as a national monument. At the same time, the Supervisors adopted a variety of conditions designed to address the needs and concerns of local residents on the Santa Cruz north coast. Third District County Supervisor Ryan Coonerty was instrumental in working with community members to understand their needs and incorporate a variety of solutions into the resolution of support that he brought forward for his Board colleagues to consider.

The campaign supports the approved Board of Supervisors’ resolution, which calls for a thorough and timely national monument management planning process conducted with ample public input, limited public access to the property until the national monument management plan is complete, limiting the geographic extent of the national monument to the 5,800 acres owned by the BLM, and securing resources to support the BLM in managing the land. The Board of Supervisors also agreed that the monument should be named ‘Coast Dairies National Monument’, unless the public wished to select a new name during the management planning process that follows national monument designation.

In recent weeks Supervisor Coonerty’s office reached out to individual constituents who voiced interest in a new name, as well as Native Americans and community organizations, with a goal of coming to local consensus before rather than after monument designation. The ‘Cotoni-Coast Dairies’ name, which celebrates two prominent aspects of the land’s culture and history, has emerged from these community conversations with enthusiastic support. The new name has been endorsed by the Davenport North Coast Association, the Rural Bonny Doon Association and the Citizens Campaign Committee. The campaign is pleased to embrace this new name at the recommendation of Supervisor Coonerty and local stakeholders.

You can rest assured that your pledge of support for the national monument will be conveyed to Congress and the White House whether you made it under the original Santa Cruz Redwoods campaign name or make it now under the new Cotoni-Coast Dairies name. Thank you for your ongoing support as we make this transition. Please spread the word and ask your friends and neighbors to join us in urging Congress and President Obama to make Cotoni-Coast Dairies a national conservation priority.
