Giving Tuesday – Gives Back To Students

Sempervirens Fund is Getting Students Outside with Giving Tuesday

June 12th Update:
Thanks to your support, Sempervirens Fund and SCA have partnered on 3 successful stewardship projects this spring! These weekend-long experiences allowed high school students from Oakland and San Mateo to develop outdoor and leadership skills, and connect with the redwoods while camping at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park and Big Basin Redwoods State Park.

The first event took place at Sempervirens Fund’s jointly owned San Vicente Redwoods property, where students got a first-hand look at the incredibly diverse landscapes of San Vicente and the adjacent Cotoni-Coast Dairies National Monument, while helping restore native grassland habitat.

The second group of students explored the towering redwood forests of our Lompico Headwaters property, getting an up-close look at our landmark carbon project while removing the invasive plant, French broom.

Sempervirens Fund recently hosted a final SCA alumni event at its Rose property adjacent to Big Basin, and with your help we look forward to continuing to provide a positive connection with the environment for the next generation!

June 2nd Update:
Thanks to your support, Sempervirens Fund and SCA have partnered on 2 successful stewardship projects this spring, with another planned in early June! These weekend-long experiences allowed high school students from Oakland and San Mateo to develop outdoor and leadership skills, and connect with the redwoods while camping at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park.

The first event took place at Sempervirens Fund’s jointly owned San Vicente Redwoods property, where students got a first-hand look at the incredibly diverse landscapes of San Vicente and the adjacent Cotoni-Coast Dairies National Monument, while helping restore native grassland habitat.

Sempervirens Fund will host a final SCA alumni event at its Rose property adjacent to Big Basin Redwoods State Park, as we look forward to continuing to provide a positive connection with the environment for the next generation!

Thank you for supporting Sempervirens Fund on Giving Tuesday! Your generosity helped us exceed our goal of $2,500 – which means that we‘ll be providing meaningful outdoor experiences for even more underserved students!

Because you cared, Sempervirens Fund will partner with the Student Conservation Association (SCA) in the Spring of 2017 on a weekend-long environmental stewardship project at San Vicente Redwoods, and Lompico Redwoods, two spectacular properties owned and managed by Sempervirens Fund. High school students from Oakland and San Mateo will take part in a guided outdoor and team building experience. For most, it will be their first camping trip and quite possibly their first time in a redwood forest. They’ll take part in invasive species removal work and learn about the ecosystems of the Santa Cruz Mountains redwood forests.

Outdoor experiences like this are essential to building the next generation’s environmental values, self-confidence and leadership skills. Many studies show that students who engage in meaningful outdoor experiences are much more likely to consider themselves “environmentalists” than those who’ve not had similar experiences. After spending time outdoors, an overwhelming 86% of SCA alumni say their experience strengthened their connection to the natural world. These same students said that they were likely to take steps in their everyday lives to protect the environment and were very interested in pursuing careers in the environmental field.

This is just a glimpse of the powerful impact your gift will make possible right here in the Bay Area. Stay tuned for photos from the Sempervirens Fund-SCA stewardship weekends next Spring!
