Statement on the Passage of Proposition 4

Statement from Sara Barth, Executive Director of Sempervirens Fund, applauding the approval of Proposition 4 and additional resources for climate resiliency

SANTA CRUZ, Calif., Nov. 6 2024 – On behalf of Sempervirens Fund, California’s first land trust, we are grateful to the voters of California for the passage of Proposition 4. This landmark $10 billion bond measure represents a crucial investment in our state’s immediate environmental future and demonstrates Californians’ commitment to addressing climate change, protecting our water, forests, parks, and natural resources, and enhancing community safety.

After years of drought, deadly wildfires, and extreme weather throughout our state, it is not shocking that Californians have used their voice at the ballot box to say now is the time to do more and protect ourselves, our natural lands, and our futures from the devastating effects of a rapidly changing climate.

The voters’ approval of Proposition 4 will have far-reaching positive impacts, including in the redwood forests of the Santa Cruz mountains, where we work every day to preserve one of our state’s most precious natural treasures: coast redwoods, which sequester more carbon than any other tree species in the world.

Prop 4 funding will bolster our efforts to: protect and restore our vital watersheds, ensuring clean and safe drinking water for millions; implement critical wildfire prevention measures, safeguarding our ancient redwood forests and nearby communities; enhance the resilience of our natural lands against climate change impacts; and support innovative projects that protect both our environment and our communities.

This measure’s passage reaffirms California’s position as a leader in environmental stewardship and climate action.

With the passage of both Prop. 4 and Santa Cruz County’s Measure Q, there are two funding sources coming together to bring significant investment to water and wildfire protection in an urgent time.

Sempervirens Fund looks forward to collaborating with state agencies, local partners, and communities to maximize the impact of this historic investment. Together, we’ll work towards a more resilient, sustainable California, preserving our natural heritage for generations to come.
