Statement on Big Basin and Governor’s California State Budget Revisions
Sempervirens Fund: Statement on California Governor’s May Revision of State Budget, Big Basin Redwoods State Park and State Park Priorities
Los Altos, Calif. (May 15, 2021) — Today Governor Gavin Newsom announced his administration’s revised fiscal year 2022 budget proposal, which included significant, necessary, and welcome increases in funding for Big Basin Redwoods State Park to aid in wildfire recovery, as well as much needed funding for wildfire resilience, deferred maintenance, and land acquisition. The revisions also request increased funding for California State Parks’ wildly successful PORTS program and critically needed investments in community parks statewide.
“Today’s budget announcement by Governor Newsom reflects a significant down payment on a bold vision for recovery of Big Basin State Park and will allow us to move forward with the urgency and ambition this beloved park deserves.,” said Sara Barth, Executive Director of Sempervirens Fund. “We applaud the Governor for taking this first critical step to invest in reimagining Big Basin. We are also delighted the Governor is prioritizing funds for land acquisition and maintenance. This is how we build a park system that meets the needs of all Californians.”
