An Inspiring Partnership From The Start

Like Sempervirens Fund, photography preserves the beauty of the Santa Cruz Mountains forever. In a click, photographers capture the wild, rugged, and diverse landscapes, and it’s majestic plant and wildlife inhabitants in an image that inspires others to connect with and protect them for future generations. It was a photographer who founded Sempervirens Fund in 1900, launching the redwood conservation movement and the largest State Park system in the nation. And it is photography today that continues to help illustrate what is at risk and what can flourish when preserved and cared for, for people and wildlife to enjoy for generations to come.

Here you can enjoy the work of talented and dedicated photographers.

One little redwood twig can host entire lichen communities—this one is home to at least six different species.

According to Dr. Rikke Reese Næsborg, "Lichen communities differ based on height, as different parts of the tree offer different microhabitats, and many lichens are quite picky about their living conditions. At the base of the tree, conditions are typically evenly humid, dark, and cool, and the bark of the tree is thick and fibrous. Some species, such as dust lichens and pixie cup lichens (in addition to many types of mosses), prefer these conditions. Moving up the tree it gets increasingly drier, brighter, and warmer, and the bark gets thinner and flakier. In addition, the tree top is more frequently wetted by gentle rain and dew, but it also dries out fast due to wind and sun exposure. Some species, such as witch’s hair, beard lichens, and horsehair lichens, prefer these tree top conditions and can therefore reach their highest abundance there."

🐱 Bobcats (Lynx rufus) 🐱 are adaptable to many different types of habitats but, preferring woodlands, they are well-suited to the Santa Cruz mountains, where they can be found—if they want to be. Their spotted coats, for which they were once hunted to near extinction, provide excellent camouflage for their own hunting–helping to keep small mammal and insect populations under control. Unfortunately, in the Santa Cruz mountains habitat fragmentation from development and poisoning from rodenticides (intended to control the very pests bobcats prey on) have become the biggest threats to their survival. In addition to protecting natural habitats where bobcats can thrive, using alternative pest control methods—like installing owl boxes to help naturally control pests—can greatly help bobcats continue to roam the region’s forests.

😌 Studies have shown that in addition to the fresher air, cleaner water, and space for exercise that healthy ecosystems can provide, just spending time in nature can decrease stress and increase indicators of health. After spending time outdoors participants in studies have shown lower adrenaline, cortisol, and blood pressure while virus and cancer fighting cells increased.

🧘 Some preliminary studies have found that phytoncides, organic compounds released by trees, help to reduce stress hormones, improve sleep and your immune system, and enhance white blood cells that help fight cancer.

🌲 Conifers have many phytoncides and coast redwood trees are not only conifers but the tallest trees on earth—giving them hundreds of feet of phytoncide production. In fact, the very thing that keeps coast redwood trees so healthy and resilient is exactly what researchers think might help keep us healthier and more resilient too. Phytoncides like terpenes allow coast redwoods to be resistant to rot, bugs, and fire as well as condense fog and cool themselves when they are released into the air—right where you can breathe them in and enjoy their benefits too.

We need nature and we need each other.
🤝
We at Sempervirens Fund are taking a moment to reflect on our country’s—and the world’s—interdependence. That is, the essential connections linking all people to one another and to our natural world. We believe our interdependence on each other and on nature means that our state parks, and all public land, should be safe, welcoming, and rewarding to explore, for everyone. This vision has not yet been fully realized but we are working together to get closer.
🌲
For Sempervirens Fund, fostering this interdependence means having more diverse representation within the Sempervirens Fund family and working to ensure equitable access to nature for all. It also means listening to, lifting up, and amplifying the voices and stories of people of color in our community who are stewards of the land, champions for conservation, and explorers of nature.
