An Inspiring Partnership From The Start

Like Sempervirens Fund, photography preserves the beauty of the Santa Cruz Mountains forever. In a click, photographers capture the wild, rugged, and diverse landscapes, and it’s majestic plant and wildlife inhabitants in an image that inspires others to connect with and protect them for future generations. It was a photographer who founded Sempervirens Fund in 1900, launching the redwood conservation movement and the largest State Park system in the nation. And it is photography today that continues to help illustrate what is at risk and what can flourish when preserved and cared for, for people and wildlife to enjoy for generations to come.

Here you can enjoy the work of talented and dedicated photographers.

Get to know the Gray Fox: The only member of the canine family that can climb trees thanks to strong hooked claws, gray foxes are known to climb trees for fruit, birds and to evade predators. When climbing to safety isn’t an option for these California natives, gray foxes can double back on their own footprints to try to throw predators like bobcats and coyotes off their trail.

When we protect the coast redwood forests in the Santa Cruz Mountains, we also protect the rich diversity of life that thrives here.

Did you know about the magical relationship between redwoods and fog?

☁️ The relationship between redwood forests and fog is cyclical.

☁️ The coastal region that redwood forests grow in is traditionally a very foggy area. But not all of that fog rolls in from the ocean.

☁️ Redwoods and other pines contain fragrant chemicals called terpenes that serve many purposes. One of those is to condense the moisture in the surrounding atmosphere.

☁️ Fog and clouds form around the trees, creating more moisture and cooler temperatures, which help redwoods thrive.

☁️ Redwoods have unique features that allow them to make use of moisture in the air, starting at the top of their canopies all the way down to their widespread root systems.

Redwoods seen through a haze of fog are iconic, after millennia of growth along the Santa Cruz Mountains. Working together, we can ensure future centuries of redwood forests among the fog.

Spending time in a redwood forest can improve mental health by reducing depression and increasing self-esteem, focus, memory, and creativity. Being surrounded by the tallest living things on earth—which are capable of living thousands of years—can leave us awestruck, help our struggles feel smaller, and help us feel more connected to the larger world.

On this National Day of Mourning, we’re remembering President Jimmy Carter’s legacy as a champion of local land conservation, land trusts, and conservancies. Carter was decades ahead of his time in his efforts to promote renewable energy and to expand the protection of wilderness areas. Among many impactful achievements for the environment, he signed bills to protect more than 100 million acres of Alaskan land and double the size of the National Park System.

After his term as the 39th President of the United States, Carter and his wife Rosalynn were inspiring examples of how to live with purpose and dedication in service to others in our communities and around the world.

Carter’s accomplishments and vision are a call to action for all of us: “We must safeguard our land so that our children and grandchildren can enjoy freshwater, clean air, scenic mountains and coasts, fertile agricultural lands, and healthy, safe places to live and thrive.” Jimmy Carter, 2019
