Not loud enough — for Wind —
A Star — not far enough to seek —
Nor near enough — to find —
A long — long Yellow — on the Lawn —
A Hubbub — as of feet —
Not audible — as Ours — to Us —
But dapperer — More Sweet —
A Hurrying Home of little Men
To Houses unperceived —
All this — and more — if I should tell —
Would never be believed —
Of Robins in the Trundle bed
How many I espy
Whose Nightgowns could not hide the Wings —

Spotlight on: Camp Jones Gulch! Camp Jones Gulch’s 920 acres are home to some of the oldest remaining redwoods in the Santa Cruz mountains and an innovative camp (run by @ymcasf) where the mighty giants have inspired generations of youth to connect with nature. From its very inception the camp pushed boundaries to provide as many children as possible with access to outdoor education and continues to do so today. Camp Jones Gulch is an invaluable stretch of redwood forest, which is not only home to notable tracts of trees like the ‘Valley of the Giants’—one of the largest unprotected stands of old-growth redwoods in the region—its landscape is also crucial for the Pescadero watershed and rare and wildlife habitat. The property is rich with habitat diversity including 39 acres of rare old growth redwood forest, 668 acres of young growth redwood, Douglas fir, and hardwood forests, mature oak woodlands and other riparian woodlands. Its two creeks, Jones Gulch and McCormick creeks, are in the Pescadero watershed which is important for both endangered coho salmon and threatened steelhead trout.

📸 📸 More critters caught on our San Vicente Redwoods cameras! 📸 📸 The wildlife of the redwood forest can be rather difficult to see–whether they’re well-camouflaged, super speedy, ranging across huge habitats, seasonal, or prefer to move under the cover of darkness. Monitoring wildlife can help to assess overall ecosystem health and give us a sense of what species are using different parts of the property, so we can plan projects as needed, coordinate with researchers, and assess areas and seasons to reduce use. 🔎 In 2019, wildlife monitoring equipment was strategically deployed across San Vicente Redwoods to gather baseline data on how wildlife actually use the land. Motion sensor cameras positioned in key areas capture wildlife presence and behavior, and with this data, we can compare when, where, and how wildlife use the forest before and after public access. This will help us to understand the direct impacts of the trails on wildlife.
