An Inspiring Partnership From The Start

Like Sempervirens Fund, photography preserves the beauty of the Santa Cruz Mountains forever. In a click, photographers capture the wild, rugged, and diverse landscapes, and it’s majestic plant and wildlife inhabitants in an image that inspires others to connect with and protect them for future generations. It was a photographer who founded Sempervirens Fund in 1900, launching the redwood conservation movement and the largest State Park system in the nation. And it is photography today that continues to help illustrate what is at risk and what can flourish when preserved and cared for, for people and wildlife to enjoy for generations to come.

Here you can enjoy the work of talented and dedicated photographers.

Today is the Global #DayOfUnplugging! These days, most of us are ever-connected via our various screens—our phones, computers, social media, and TV. That's why it's so important to take some time off to disconnect and unplug. Even though there is rain in the forecast today, spend some time reading a book, drawing, meditating, and planning your next trip to the Santa Cruz mountains (when the skies are a little less stormy).

Fungi can take many forms. This one in particular looks a lot like a piece of charred wood, but if you 🔎 zoom in 🔍 you can see tiny dots that release spores. In fact, Biscogniauxia appears after a fire. Mycologist Maya Elson explains, “Fires break down nutrients in the summer, fungi break them down in the winter." Read more and meet the mushrooms of San Vicente Redwoods via the link in our bio and in the comments!

🍄 The brown cup mushroom (Peziza arvernensis) release spores from the smooth inner surface of its cup in a delicate smoke-like wisp after its been triggered by touch or a burst of air. Try blowing on a cup mushroom with a long stream of air 💨 to see its spores dance gently away. It takes billions of spores to be visible to the human eye, and each one of those spores contains genetic information. Want to learn more about this mushroom and the other fungi that call the redwood forest home? 🔊 Check out our new Fun-guide (link in bio!) and catch mycologist Maya Elson next TUESDAY (2/27) at 1pm PT at our free Under the Redwoods webinar!

It's #NationalWildlifeDay! We wanted to share these tips so you can continue to enjoy all of the beautiful trails, campgrounds, and picnic areas of the Santa Cruz mountains without disturbing any of the cool creatures that live there. When visiting parks or other green spaces, be sure to:

🦊 Keep a distance
🦉 Leave no trace—take out everything that you brought in, and dispose of trash properly
🦋 Take close-up photos using a zoom lens
🐕 Leash dogs, and keep kids close-by
🌲 Teach others what you know so they can follow these guidelines and also help to keep our wild spaces wild
🤝 Support organizations like Sempervirens Fund, which helps to protect California's redwood forests and all of the inhabitants that call it home—learn more via the link in our bio and in the comments.
