Exploring Trails and Their Benefits

Vamos Outdoors

It might be called The Great Outdoors for several reasons. It can be beautiful. It can be fun. It can be inspiring. But did you know that it can also be great for your health?

Hit the trail with our partners at Latino Outdoors to explore the beauty and benefits of the places you help us protect in the Santa Cruz mountains, and learn how visiting these places can help protect you. Let’s vamos outdoors!

Nature and Health

Spending time outdoors can improve your physical and mental well-being. And you might be surprised how. It’s not all about how far or fast you can go. By incorporating forest bathing techniques to your time outside, everyone can enjoy nature’s healing benefits.

“Forest bathing is all about getting in nature, slowing down, taking it in through the senses. It’s not a hike for physical fitness, it's not a nature identification walk, it really is just for the purpose of being in nature,” Dr. Suzanne Bartlett Hackenmiller, Sempervirens Fund’s Wellness Advisor and author of The Outdoor Adventurer’s Guide to Forest Bathing, explains. With this in mind, Dr. Hackenmiller helped us create Trails Rx, a free program with easy-rated trails and tailored forest bathing prompts, to help everyone enjoy the wonders of nature’s healing benefits. Whether you're seeking relaxation, rejuvenation, adventure, recovering from injury, or just setting out to explore parks for the first time, Trails Rx can help you find the right trail in the Santa Cruz mountains for you.

Virtual Time in Nature

When getting into nature isn’t an option, virtual forest bathing can still offer health benefits. Some studies suggest that simply seeing a picture of nature can benefit us and new studies are delving into the effectiveness of seeing nature through virtual reality. You can visit the virtual redwoods for a mood boost.

Protecting and Connecting
with Nature

As we continue preserving the remaining redwood forests of the Santa Cruz mountains, we will build on our legacy of improving access. Because a healthy environment helps to support healthy people and healthy communities. And nothing has more potential to positively impact our environment and health than coast redwood forests which can reduce more carbon dioxide than any other tree, clean our water, release health boosting phytoncides, and induce awe with their massive heights and lifespans.
